Register and pay for your men's or women's team for the 2025 Cairns Cup here. If you are registering multiple teams you will need to create a new registration for each team.

  • 2025 Cairns Cup Information Sheet
    Housekeeping:
    Edmonton PCYC Sports Complex:
    1. Thank you for helping us in keeping the complex clean and tidy by using the bins provided.
    2. No food or eskies in court area thank you, only water bottles allowed.
    3. Teams failing to follow expectations around the no food and drink in the court policy will have points deducted.
    4. Teams are expected to be reminding any of their spectators of this as their failure to follow this expectation will have the same consequences.
    5. Food and drinks are allowed in the reception area. Please use the bins provided.
    6. In the event of an emergency evacuation, please exit your closest door and assemble in the car park.
    7. Results will be displayed throughout the day at a place designated on the day.

    Before the Tournament:
    a) All members of the team must be registered on the team sheet PRIOR to the beginning of the team’s first game.
    b) All members of the team must have current 2025 Volleyball Queensland membership.
    c) All members of the team must have consistent uniforms with visible numbers at least on the back. Numbers also on the front are preferred which will align with 2026 Cairns Cup expectations.

    Tournament Rules:
    1. Timekeeping:
    a) Games begin from 8am and each game is designated a 1 hour (60 minutes) slot starting on the hour.
    b) Warm up for the next game begins immediately on the hour.
    No hitting or serving until warmup time begins. General warmup ‘pepper’ is allowed if the court is free due to an early finish.

    Warm up procedure:
    • At 60 minutes = general warmup (3 minutes) e.g. 10:00am
    • At 57 minutes = Hitting through position 4 (left side hitting) (2 minutes) e.g. 10:03am
    • At 55 minutes = Hitting through position 2 (right side hitting) (1 minute) e.g. 10:05am
    • At 54 minutes = Serving (1 minute) e.g. 10:06am
    • At 53 minutes = Break for rotations (1 minute) e.g. 10:07am
    • At 52 minutes = First serve e.g. 10:08am

    c) Late teams:
    • If a playing team is late to their scheduled game, they will forfeit (with gameplay):
    i. 1 set if the team has not taken the court by 15 minutes into time.
    ii. The entire game if the team has not taken the court by 30 minutes into time.
    • The opposing team will win a forfeited set 25-0.

    2. Captain Duties:
    a. Team lists must be filled out by captains/coaches before the end of warmup time. Players who are not on the scoresheet team list are NOT eligible to take the court during that game.
    b. Captains from both teams are to read and sign the scoresheet after the end of each game.

    3. Gameplay:
    a. All men’s games are played to best of 3 sets (25, 25, 15). Third set not being compulsory, EXCEPT the gold medal matches of the open men’s and women’s divisions which will be played as best of 5 sets (25, 25, 25, 25, 15).
    b. Teams must win 2 sets for a best-of-3 game or 3 sets in a best-of-5 game to be recorded as a win.
    c. In timed games, if the timer runs out before the end of a set, a winning team must be above 8 points AND be leading by 2 points for the set to be counted.
    d. If at the end of game time scores are equal, an additional point will be played to create a score difference.
    e. Last serve will be at the 58th minute e.g. 2:58pm to allow for the next game to immediately begin at the next hour.
    f. Teams will get 3 tournament points for a win, 2 tournament points for a draw, 1 tournament point for a loss and 0 tournament points for a forfeit.
    g. Team rankings will be determined in the following order:
    1. Tournament points
    2. Number of matches won
    3. Number of sets won
    4. Points difference
    h. Current FIVB rules will apply in all matches with the addition of the 12-substitution rule, and the libero player may be changed each set.
    i. Teams must present at least 6 players for the start of each match, but if their number is reduced to 5 players during the match due to injury only, the team will be permitted to continue play without penalty. Teams playing with 5 players must play with a ‘space’ in the empty position, maintaining other rotational positions. If a team is reduced to less than 5 players, the remainder of the match will be forfeited but any points gained during the unfinished match will be retained for the purpose of calculating percentages.
    j. Players need to play at least 2 round games to qualify for finals.
    k. All players will play at their own risk and Cairns Volleyball Association will not be held responsible for any injuries or medical and associated costs incurred.

    4. Duty Team Rules:
    a. 5 team members are required to fulfill duty responsibilities (1 first referee, 1 second referee, 2 lines people, and 1 scorer, and follows the warmup procedure in section 1b. Duty positions can be swapped between sets.
    b. If the duty team does not provide at least 5 team members for duty at the time of the first serve, they will forfeit 1 tournament point, failure to provide duty for 2 games during the tournament will result in disqualification.
    c. If teams have extenuating circumstances which prevent them from being able to provide 5 team members for duty, they should approach a CVA official to discuss alternatives.
    d. In the ‘MVP Nominations’ section of the scoresheet, duty teams please write 3 players who you believe had a positive impact on the game.
    e. After both playing captains have signed, the captain of the WINNING team will take the completed scoresheet to a CVA official.

    5. Disputes:
    Please respect the duty team and the referees’ calls and decisions. In the case of a SERIOUS dispute approach a CVA official and outline the dispute. Accept the resolution offered by the official and continue with play. It is our goal to avoid disputes leading to game stoppages and disruption of the day’s events.

    6. Sportsmanship:
    All athletes are spectators participating in the 2025 Cairns Cup are expected to behave in a safe, responsible and respectful manner at all times. CVA reserves the right to eject players and spectators who are acting inappropriately from the tournament without refund of team nomination fees.

    7. Tournament Prizes:

    • The winning teams from the men’s and the winning team from the women’s with have their team fee refunded.
    • Medals will be presented to teams from each men’s and women’s competition who place first, second and third.
    • The overall MVP’s of each men’s and women’s competition will be announced at medal presentations.
